FUNDING YOUR LIFE AT THE BAR

Funding the BPTC can be an expensive feat but there are several options that you can consider in order to afford the qualification:

Drawdown
If you are lucky enough to obtain pupillage before undertaking the BPTC, then you may be able to draw down some of your Pupillage award from your chambers. This may not be available at all Chambers, so check with your Pupillage Provider first.

Inns of Court Scholarship
Each Inn of Court offers a comprehensive scholarship system, consisting of over £4million. It really is free money! The award can range from a grant for your wig and gown, to course fees being covered - it depends on your merits and sometimes financial situation.

In the October prior to enrolment on the BPTC you should apply to ONE of the Inns of Court for Scholarship. Relevant forms can be found on each Inns website. You may not apply to more than one Inn of Court for Scholarship. You do not have to be a member of the Inn before you apply, however if you are a member of an Inn already then you must apply to your Inn, also if you are offered Scholarship you are expected to join that Inn.

It is also possible to apply for scholarships for the GDL. The deadline date is usually in May.

After the paper process, you may be invited for an interview. Each Inn operates differently, some interview all candidates whereas others make a shortlist. Please read the relevant websites carefully.

Interviews also vary between Inn, many will give you a stimulus such as a case or topical issue to discuss. Be prepared with relevant news topics, answers to basic questions and the unexpected.

Relevant selection criteria can include:

  • Intellectual qualities (ability to analyse complex information and identify essentials, judgment, perceptiveness, good memory - academic achievement generally being good evidence on all counts);

  • Motivation (very high level of drive and determination, commitment to appropriate aspects of work at the Bar);

  • Relationships (ability to get on with a wide range of people, diplomacy, ability to sustain relationships);

  • Character (calmness under fire, ability to work hard for long hours and against deadlines, sound personal values and integrity); and

  • Impact (articulacy, persuasiveness, confidence, ability to suit conduct to the occasion).
